Kuvempu, whose full name is Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, is a prominent Indian poet, playwright and novelist. He was born on December 29, 1904 in a village called Hirekodige in Thirthahalli Taluk of Shivamogga District, Karnataka.
His early education was at Koolimath. Later he completed his secondary education in Thirthahalli. He completed his education in Mysore with a master’s degree in Kannada literature from Mysore University.
He played a significant role in the modernization of Kannada literature throughout his career. He was known for his progressive ideas and his commitment to social reform. Her writings reflect her concern for social issues including women’s empowerment, caste discrimination and the importance of education.
His literary contributions are vast and varied. He also wrote poems, dramas, novels, essays and children’s literature. His most famous works include the epic “Sri Ramayana Darshanam” and the novel “Bride in the Hills” (Mirror of the Bride). His works are deeply rooted in Indian culture, mythology and spirituality, but he also explores contemporary themes and issues.
In recognition of his immense contributions to literature, Kuvempu received several awards and honours, including India’s highest literary honour, the Jnanpith Award. Having served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University, he was also awarded the title Rashtrakavi (National Poet) by the Government of Karnataka.
Kuvempu died on November 11, 1994 leaving behind a rich legacy in Kannada literature. His works continue to inspire and influence generations of writers.
